Brown University Research Grant

Received a Brown University/NWC Humanitarian Response Program research grant to investigate how can the humanitarian civil-military coordination framework support a more environmentally sustainable humanitarian response? This research proposal investigates the environmental impact of humanitarian response and how humanitarian civil-military coordination framework can play a role. The humanitarian network coordinated by United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) partnered with technical expertise of the United Nations UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) to form the Joint Environment Unit (JEU). The JEU assists countries affected by disasters and crisis and works to enhance the environmental sustainability of humanitarian action. This project would examine the existing academic and policy literature on the environmental impacts of humanitarian response, identify policies and practices to mitigate adverse impacts, and investigate the role that UN Humanitarian Civil-Military Coordination (CMCoord) and militaries can have to support this effort. Bridging the humanitarian-development nexus, minimizing the environmental impact of response to recovery ensures a more achievable and sustainable rehabilitation.
